What is the Nepali Calendar?
The Nepali calendar — officially known as the Bikram Sambat (BS) or Vikram Samvat calendar — is Nepal's official national calendar. It is a lunisolar calendar: its months follow the Moon's cycles, while the year is calibrated to the solar cycle.
The BS calendar is approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian (AD/CE) calendar. For example, the year 2081 BS corresponds roughly to 2024–2025 AD. The Nepali New Year begins on 1st Baisakh, which falls in mid-April each year.
The calendar is used for all government, religious, cultural, and educational purposes in Nepal, including national holidays, festivals (Dashain, Tihar, Holi), and astrological timings (Panchang, Muhurta).

Bikram Sambat vs. Gregorian Calendar
The key difference between the Bikram Sambat and Gregorian calendars:
- BS year = AD year + 56 (before mid-April) or +57 (after mid-April)
- BS months do not align exactly with Gregorian months — they straddle two calendar months
- BS month lengths (29–32 days) vary each year; Gregorian months are mostly fixed
- The BS New Year (1st Baisakh) falls in mid-April; the Gregorian New Year is January 1
- Many Nepali festivals are fixed by the BS calendar and correspond to variable Gregorian dates each year

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Nepali calendar?
The Nepali calendar is based on the Bikram Sambat (BS) system — a lunisolar calendar that is approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. It is the official calendar of Nepal, used for government, religious, and daily purposes.
What year is it in Bikram Sambat?
As of 2026 CE (Gregorian), the Bikram Sambat year is 2083. The BS year begins in mid-April (1st Baisakh) and ends in mid-April the following year. To convert: BS year = AD year + 56 (approximately, before mid-April) or +57 (after mid-April).
How many days are in a Nepali month?
Nepali months vary between 29 and 32 days. Unlike the Gregorian calendar which has fixed month lengths, BS months are based on the Moon's movement and vary each year. The calendar is published annually by the Government of Nepal.
When does the Nepali New Year begin?
The Nepali New Year (Nava Varsha) begins on 1st Baisakh, which typically falls in mid-April in the Gregorian calendar. This day is a national holiday in Nepal.
What is the difference between Hatte Patro and the Nepali Calendar?
The Nepali Calendar (Patro) is the underlying month/year grid of the Bikram Sambat system. Hatte Patro is a traditional daily almanac — a pocket-sized calendar booklet — that includes additional Panchang details like Tithi, Nakshatra, Vara, Yoga, Karana, festivals, and auspicious timings for each day.
